When I saw the snow outside at 6am on Saturday morning I thought for sure that the Ripper would be canceled, but those NSMBA people are a tough bunch! The Ripper was on and it turned out to be an amazing day for photos.

I was lucky enough to get a lift in James' truck (Obsession Bikes) for the start of the race.

A Day in Toronto

On Saturday after the wedding my brother, Chris, and I had some time to check out Toronto. It was a beautiful day! We checked out the CN Tower, downtown and finished the day with another awesome meal at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse (thank-you Chris!). It was so much fun to wander around the city, here are a few photos:

Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Hall

Two weeks ago I got a phone call from my sister telling me that she's getting married, tonight I'm sitting in a hotel room in Toronto editing her wedding photos.

Yesterday afternoon we headed to Lift salon with so that all the girls could get their hair done. We arrived to champagne and strawberries and spent a few hours being pampered by the amazing staff at the salon. The space was great and the light was perfect for photographs, we had a fabulous time relaxing, joking and getting beautiful.

From there we headed back to the Hilton and to the Ruth's Chris Steak House downstairs to inspect the room where the wedding would be taking place. Jacquie and Ken's good friend, Rita, had taken care of all the decorations including; elaborate candelabras and table decorations. We had a few stressful moments when there was concern about having all the candles lit in the restaurant. The photo below is of Jacquie hugging the Hilton maintenance man when he approved the lighting of the candles!

Once the room was ready it was time to get dressed! Being the photographer and sister of the bride I had just enough time to get into my outfit, I ended up leaving my running shoes on and forgot my jewelry. . . it's a good thing that I got my hair done (thank-you Rita!).

We helped Jacquie into her dress and she looked stunning! The dress was perfect, her mom and I helped her buy it last month in Vancouver. After a disappointing morning of dress shopping we stopped into a wedding dress store in New Westminster and with the help of the women there we found 'the' dress. Although the dress was amazing, it was her shoes that got all the attention!
At 6pm everyone except for Jacquie, Ken and I headed down to the private room at the restaurant to get ready for the ceremony. I followed the bride and groom as they walked through the hotel on the way to the wedding and took some photos of them.

When Jacquie and Ken made their entrance into the candle lit room for the ceremony, there wasn't a dry eye. The small ceremony and amazing dinner/reception that followed was wonderful, there was champagne (lots of champagne), delicious food, a beautiful cake, heartfelt speeches from friends and family and of course, by the end of the night, a lot of happy drunk people celebrating in our hotel room (oh, and we sang the national anthem)!
Jacquelyn and Ken are two of the best suited people I have ever met, they are perfect together and that made their wedding very special. Thank-you Jacquie and Ken for sharing your special day with me, I feel very lucky to be your wedding photographer.

Last Stop Before the Airport

On our way to the airport we stopped off to see some more iguanas. There is a big old tree near a stream that is home to many iguanas. When you first look at the tree you can't see anything but the more you look you start to realize that it is full of iguanas.

Lunch at Casa Frida

On our last full day in Mexico we spent the afternoon at Casa Frida's (www.casafrida.com), a Bed and Breakfast down the beach. I never miss an opportunity to visit Anabella, the owner, when I am in Barra de Potosi. Anabella is an amazing chef and wonderful hostess. Her property is beautifully decorated and is a wonderful atmosphere to relax in. . . the killer margaritas don't hurt either!

On this visit we had a special treat as Anabella's son was visiting and, like his mother, is a wonderful chef. He prepared a fabulous lunch for us that have everyone going back for seconds and thirds.

Chole

Chole is a town a little ways down the highway from Barra de Potosi, where my parents' live. The town has recently become quiet well know for it's archaeological discoveries and in addition to a number of artifacts from several different cultures being found in the area, they've also started excavating a pyramid. It's believed that there are several pyramids in the area but until now there haven't been funds available to excavate them.

This are some of the artifacts that are on display in the small museum in Chole:

This cactus is estimated to be 300 years old and it is believed that hugging the cactus will cure you of any ailments. Given how sick I'd been over the holidays I thought it was worth a shot.

This is the view from the top of hill that we hiked up, the area is a rock quarry that was used by ancient civilizations for carving, many artifacts have been found in this area. The hill in the distance is the beach where my parents' live.

Early Morning Photos

On Monday, Dad and I got up before sunrise and headed out to take some photos. The last time we did this we were circled by a pack of dogs on a deserted dirt road, this time we only had to deal with a bull that tried to pee on the car.

Rebeca's Animals

As I'm sure most of you already know, I love animals. My parent's have a friend in Zihua named Rebeca, who takes in animals that don't have anywhere else to go. Our part of Mexico doesn't have an SPCA like we do at home, so Rebeca cares for the animals with her own money.

As long as I've know her, Rebeca has been working with the Mexican government to get land for her to construct a proper facility to take care of these animals, currently they are all in Rebecca's home. The animals that she takes care of have all be domesticated or are otherwise unable to care for themselves in the wild. Rebeca works with the local schools to teach children about proper care and respect for animals, her dream is to have a facility where the children can come and interact and learn about the animals.

I hope that Rebeca will be able to realize her dream, she's quickly running out of room to care for all the animals that she's taken in.

Iguana Reserve

On Thursday morning we headed out to the Turtle Reserve where a group has been hatching turtle eggs and releasing baby turtles in hopes to increase the population. The sea turtles in this area are often hunted and their eggs are dug up for eating, even though it's illegal.

Unfortunately when we got to the reserve there was no one there and everything was locked up. We waited around for a little bit and got to peak through the door to see some baby turtles, but no one turned up so we headed out.

Our next stop was the Iguana Reserve just off the highway on the way home. After getting slightly lost in the salt flats on the way there we were happy to find that someone was there to show us around. We got a great tour of reserve which included iguanas, snapping turtles, peacocks, goats, ducks and deer.

Puppies in Mexico

On January 4th, I headed down to Mexico with two friends to visit my parents who live in a small fishing village outside of Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa (www.casa-puesta-del-sol.com). My family has been visiting the same area in Mexico for the last 23 years and for the last 10 years my parents have called it home for part of the year.

My parents love animals and growing up we've always had pets. Since they started going to Mexico regularly my parents have adopted two dog and cared for quite a few more. There are many dogs in their area that need good homes, if anyone is ever interested in adopting a dog from Mexico please let me know. I'd be happy to provide you with the necessary information, it's surprisingly easy to bring a dog home with you.

This is Terra, my parents' dog.

This is Osito, my parents' other dog. When they adopted him off the beach, he was in such bad shape that no one would touch him. We were shocked when he turned out to be such a cute puppy.

This beautiful dog belongs to neighbors down the beach.

According to my mom, this little guy is next in line for adoption.

This is Kiwi, he's always around, usually in front of my parents' house. He's an excellent guard dog and everyone loves him. While I was visiting, he fell into a well on the neighbors property, luckily someone heard him crying and got him out. He hurt his hind legs and will likely be going in to see the vet if he isn't healed up soon.

This guy was so sweet, all he wanted was some attention and if you pet him, he became your best friend. He really needs a good home.

I took this picture last year when I was in Mexico. This little guy was so cute and I managed to track him down when I was visiting this time. He's all grown up now (below) and his name is Mexico. I was really happy to see that he's well taken care of.

Port Alberni Bike Park

On Saturday I headed over to Port Alberni for my annual 'extended family' Christmas. I got to catch up with my family while we enjoyed a great dinner and of course some of Grandma's fabulous pumpkin pies!

Since I was already in Port Alberni I took the opportunity to head out to the bike park that Amber Zirnhelt and Jay Hoots worked on this summer. Two of kids that ride in the park met me there and showed me around the trail that they had built.

Even though it was raining hard while we were checking out the trail, I was so happy to see the work that the kids have done. Hopefully the next time I'm there I'll have my bike with me!

Photos with Hoots

On Saturday morning I met up with Jay Hoots at Interriver Bike Park. We got there early so we could get some frosty shots on the skinnies.

Once the sun came up and the frost was gone we headed over to Boundary, a trail on Fromme, and got some more shots there. Karen, the trail builder responsible for Boundary, has done some amazing work and there we tons of photo ops along the trail.

David Garibaldi

Tonight I attended an art show by David Garibaldi at the Oh My Godard Gallery on Granville Street, what an amazing artist. David 'performs' but putting on an inspiring show of painting while rocking out to loud music and encouragement from the audience, his performances are called 'Rhythm and Hue'.

I was lucky to be able to attend the show with my brother, and thanks to him, I got to meet the artist. David's performance was unique and very exciting to see, if you get a chance to see David perform, go see it!

2nd Annual Muddbunnies Calendar

The 2nd annual Muddbunnies calendar has arrived! Last year I was lucky enough to be part of group that came up the idea of putting together a calendar to raise money and awareness for women's mountain biking, specifically the Muddbunnies Riding Club. This year due to conflicting schedules and general busy-ness, I wasn't as involved with the production of the calendar but did get out to shoot two of the riding shots for the lovely models, Nicole and Colleen.

Friday night was the calendar release party, it was great to see such an awesome turnout and so much support for womens' riding. Below is a shot of my friend Jen and I at the party, Jen is one of the lovely ladies in the calendar. Thank-you to photography Corey Toews for the shot!

Soccer Games Don't Get Rained Out

I found out on Saturday that soccer games don't get rained out. After taking some family photos with my friend Lucy (in the rain), I got to stick around for her son's soccer game. Even though it was cold and wet, sloshing around in the rain and belly diving in the mud looked like a lot of fun!

Number 11 played like a superstar. . . I think we may be looking at the next Mr. Beckham!

Over Half Way There!

Since starting fundraising for The Weekend to End Breast Cancer 2008 last month, I have raised $1100 of the $2000 necessary to participate (totals on my webpage will be updated this weekend).

Last night I held a fundraiser with all the fabulous mountain bike woman I know. I sold handmade scarves and gift cards along with clothes from Loeka Clothing and Endless Biking. A big thank-you to both companies for being so generous and supporting the BC Cancer Foundation. A couple more big thank-yous go out to Becky, our Weekend to End Breast Cancer team captain, for convincing me to participate in the event and to Seann for stocking our fridge with beer for the fundraiser, it was greatly appreciated! Finally, one more big thank-you to all the girls who came out last night, it was great to see all of you and to have your support and encouragement!

Loeka Catalogue Girls

Coreena from Loeka Clothing hosted an evening for the Loeka catalogue models at my place on Wednesday night. We had some wine, yummy food and a lot of laughs. Back in August I worked with the girls to shoot a lot of the images that were used in the 2008 Loeka catalogue. Thank-you to the girls from coming through on short notice and thank-you to Loeka for spoiling us with some great clothing.

After a very eventful 2007 our friends Matt and Nara have decided to wrap up their busy year by eloping in Tofino next week. Three Dogs, Two Riders and One Photographer

I had great time shooting this weekend, on Saturday I photographed friends' dogs as part of my Photography for the Cure project and on Sunday I photographed Colleen for the Muddbunnies calendar on Mount Fromme.

Taking pictures of the dogs was challenging, they provided as much action as mountain bike photography but were less predictable. . . well, it was actually my friends' frisbee throwing abilities that were less predictable. There were a few missed shots as I scrambled to get out of the line of fire. Taz is a blue and red healer cross and Dakota is a red healer and rottweiler cross.

On Sunday, Seann, Susan, Huntley (Susan's Golden Retriever) and I met up with Colleen and Nicole to get some shots on Floppy Bunny/Slippery Canoe (Mount Fromme). After some initial frustration with my remote flash set-up, I gave up and embraced the low light and rainy atmosphere. The pictures turned out great and we had a some laughs. Thank-you to Seann, Susan and Nicole (special thanks to Nicole for her excellent performance as my lighting model) for coming out and a big thank-you to Colleen who keep sessioning the hucks even though she was tired, wet and hungry!

Photography for the Cure

This past year the Weekend to End Breast Cancer raised 5.1 million dollars for The BC Cancer Foundation. I have been inspired by my friends and family who have participated in previous years to join the event in 2008. I will be fundraising for the next year to raise the $2000 needed to participate in the walk.

I am beginning my fundraising efforts by offering a deal on family photography. For $100 you will receive a one hour photo session and a CD of the full resolution images (ready for printing). Hotwheels with Endless Biking

On Sunday I spent a few hours with the Endless Biking Hotwheels class, a mountain bike skills class for women that covers jumps, drops and steeps. I had a fabulous time out on the trail with these girls as they all tried new stunts and gained new confidence in their riding abilities. It was very inspiring to watch, probably the most inspiring thing to see was Susan's bail with a big grin on her face, you know you're having fun when. . .

Colleen at the Dirt Jumps

This morning Colleen and I headed out to the Richmond dirt jump park to get some shots for her month in the Muddbunnies calendar. Home for Thanksgiving

Last weekend I headed home to Bamfield, on Vancouver Island, to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family. Between storms I was able to get out with my camera and capture some of the local sights. Bamfield is a really beautiful place and if you ever have the opportunity I highly recommend visiting there.

Natural High

On Friday after work I spent some time on Natural High (a mountain bike trail on Mt. Fromme) taking pictures of Nicole who will be in the upcoming 2008 Muddbunnies calendar. The stunt that you see her riding in the picture below was built by her husband, just a few feet down the trail from where they got married this summer. Congratulations Nicole on conquering the stunt!
